Nilam Ram, associate professor of human development and family studies, and nationally acclaimed percussionists Robyn Schulkowsky and Joey Baron created music and animations from the data collected by researchers at the recent “Playing the Archive” concert.
The data was presented by Ram; Denise Solomon, head and professor of communication arts and sciences; and David Almeida, professor of human development and family studies, all at Penn State, and David Lyndon-Stale, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. A data driven art exhibition was also available and could be attended by concert-goers before, during, and after the concert.
According to Ram, the working hypothesis of the concert is that the interplay among musicians, visual artists, and data analysts will enrich and shape the ways researchers render and engage information. The group works in partnership with Studio|Lab at Penn State to create a space where scientists can refine the aesthetic dimensions of their work to create innovation.
