CATS Safety is a web-based system that allows for a more streamlined process to submit, review, and approve the use of regulated and biohazardous materials in research and instruction (as defined in Penn State Policy RP11). CATS Safety joins existing systems, CATS IRB and CATS IACUC.
CATS Safety is now launched for all new submissions and certain renewals following last year’s pilot phase. Throughout the pilot, our teams have been working with researchers individually to make the transition to CATS Safety. Moving forward, we will be offering frequent Zoom training sessions on the new system, and we offer additional training resources, including multiple videos and guides, on our website.
CATS Safety is supported by the Office of Research Affairs (ORA) and Research Quality Assurance (RQA), the Office for Research Protections (ORP), and the Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) in partnership with an advisory committee of biosafety subject matter experts at the University.
University Park and Commonwealth Campuses Researchers & Department Safety Officers: please note that CATS Safety is separate from the information system being implemented by EHS (Environmental Health and Safety). Once the EHS safety information system is active, it will integrate with CATS Safety.
